Water mill

In level pasture at the W foot of a low rise, 200m E of the River Liffey. Augustinian Abbey/Priory (KD023-016----) founded in 1202 by Meyler Fitzhenry and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St David (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 154, 177). One of two mills (KD023-016006-) in the townland of Greatconnell listed in the 1654-56 Civil Survey of Co. Kildare (Simington 1952, 129). The precise location of this second mill has not been identified in the townland of Greatconnell. Earthworks in the field to the S of the abbey and close to the location of the mill race depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map may be related to one of these medieval watermills. A watermill is depicted standing on the N bank of the River Liffey to the S of the abbey on the 17th century Down Survey map of Greatconnell Barony.
