What is recorded here

Within the graveyard (KK023-072002-) associated with the medieval church of Burnchurch (KK023-072001-), at the base of the external E gable of the ruined C of I church. An oval sandstone escutcheon (H 0.73m; Wth 0.57m; T 0.07-0.09m) consisting of a raised oval area (Wth 0.34m) surrounded by a moulded frame (Wth c. 0.11m), with a projecting knop (D 0.03m) at the top. It is very worn. There is a suggestion of a carving on the raised oval area, which presumably bore a coat of arms, but nothing clearly discernible. It is possible that this formed part of a wall monument within the medieval church. Stylistically it possibly dates to the 17th century. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
