Virginia Cottage

Semi-detached two-bay two-storey house with single-bay two-storey block to east, built c.1910, incorporating fabric of earlier building. Pitched artificial slate roofs having terracotta ridge tiles, uPVC rainwater goods and rendered chimneystacks having tall dog tooth patterned red brick cylindrical pots. Rubble stone walls having painted roughcast render to upper floor of two-bay block, and with rendered walls to gable and rear. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills. Tripartite timber window having one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor. Paired timber casement windows to first floor. Canted bay window with quarry glazing to single-bay block. Timber casement windows to first floor single-bay block. Square-headed opening to rear elevation (north-west) with recent timber panelled door.

The irregular facade of this building, which incorporates fabric of an earlier building, is an unusual addition to the streetscape in Castletownshend. The pleasing asymmetry and picturesque features such as the quarry glazed bay window and eccentric chimneystacks add to its character and charm.
