Violet Florence Martin was born in 1862 at Ross House in Connemara, the youngest of sixteen children in a Galway tribe that had survived famine and penal laws by bending its own rules. Her father lost his fortune saving his tenants, yet the family returned to Ross after fraud revealed the true cost of trust. She carried that inheritance into fiction with Edith Somerville, naming herself Martin Ross and giving Irish life a voice both precise and playful.
