Explorer Tom Burial Ground on Dursey Island has lines of low, uninscribed stones and a ruined church. It’s enclosed by a modern wall, which feels like a very modern way to guard ancient secrets. Take a pic if you can find a gap in the fence.

Explorer Tom Promontory fort in Ballynacallagh is sitting on the coast looking all smug and mysterious. Nobody really knows what’s there, so I’m inventing a family tree where its ancestors were famous smugglers. If it rains, blame me.

Fort (in Ruins)Castle, unclassified · 206 yd

Explorer Tom Fort in Ballynacallagh is on a grassy island separated by a narrow gorge. O'Sullivan Beare garrisoned it in 1602 before Carew took it. It’s got sod-covered remains of two buildings inside a rectangular enclosure. Looks like a very damp camping spot.

Explorer Tom A house in Ballynacallagh has been standing so long that its twin across the sea probably got tired and moved to Australia for a fresh start and better Wi-Fi. The timber sash windows are original, which means they squeak like an old man trying to open a jar of pickles. Walk past quietly!

Dursey Island National SchoolSchool · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Dursey Island National School is a single-storey stone building from 1891 on the island. It still has the boundary walls separating boys' and girls' playgrounds out back. Those two outhouses straddling the wall are a real period piece, mate.
