Valley Mount

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1900, having three-bay end elevations, canted end bay windows now incorporated, with later porch, under continuous slate roof, and lower two-storey flat-roof return to rear. Hipped slate roof with decorative rendered chimneystacks and some cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls, with render sill course and panelled pilasters to first floor, and rendered sill course to ground floor of façade. Segmental-headed window openings, façade having moulded rendered surrounds, first floor windows being double-width, and all windows having cut limestone sills and replacement uPVC windows. Segmental-headed opening to interior of porch with timber panelled door, sidelights and fanlight. Outbuildings around yard to north, that to west having pitched slate roof, rubble limestone walls and segmental-headed openings, that to north having double-leaf timber battened doors. Five-bay former vernacular house to north having hipped corrugated-iron roof, rendered walls and square-headed doorway and windows, former with timber battened door. Other outbuilding has segmental-headed doorways with rubble limestone walls and voussoirs. And tiber battened doors. Painted rendered boundary walls and gate piers, having double-leaf wrought-iron gates to yard. Moulded rendered octagonal-plan gate piers set in random rubble limestone walls and having cast-iron gates to south-west entrance to site.

This attractive house retains its original character in such feature as fine moulded render detailing to walls and chimneystacks and canted ground floor bays. The imposing gate piers are particularly decorative examples of their type. The outbuilding to the north of the site has the form of a vernacular house and may have served as an earlier dwelling prior to the construction of Valley Mount. This complex of house, outbuildings and gates forms and attractive feature in the landscape.
