Ullard School

Detached two-bay single-storey school, c.1825, with single-bay single-storey gabled flanking entrance end bays. Decommissioned, pre-1903. In use as pair of semi-detached single-bay single-storey houses, 1973. Now disused. Hipped slate roof (gabled to end bays) with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack, and no rainwater goods surviving on rendered eaves. Unpainted rendered, ruled and lined walls with rendered surrounds to gables. Square-headed window openings in bipartite arrangement in elliptical-headed recesses with cut-limestone sills, and four-over-four timber sash windows. Square-headed door openings in round-headed recesses with cut-granite surrounds, and timber doors. Set back from line of road in own grounds with overgrown grounds to site.

A pleasant school reminiscent stylistically, if not in terms of scale of the contemporary D'Israeli Endowed School (1826), Bough, in neighbouring County Carlow. Having been put out of use by the end of the nineteenth century the school has since been reasonably well maintained to present an early aspect with the original composition attributes surviving in place together with most of the historic fabric. Forming a neat self-contained group with the church (12402507/KK-25-07) on the opposite side of the road the school remains an important element of the architectural heritage of the locality on account of the status as the earliest purpose-built educational facility in the area.
