Tredegar House Park gives Newport a sweep of lawns, a winding lake and woodland beside the red-brick mansion of the Morgan family. You can take a proper walk without buying a house ticket, then look back and see why the owners wanted such a broad setting. Tom calls it his front garden; the National Trust has asked for the keys back. The mansion belonged to the Morgans for centuries, but this account belongs to the surrounding park. An oak avenue still stretches from the old gates towards Ruperra, the last of several avenues that once spread from the house. Redwoods and a lake add their own scale. Ducks, swans and other water birds use the lake, while the lawns serve everyday walkers and families. The park has become public ground in a city that has grown around the former estate. Walk the lakeside paths, then turn towards the surviving oak avenue to read the old design in the landscape. A picnic or a slow look at the trees works as well as a determined circuit. Tom says he once challenged a redwood to a height contest. The tree is still waiting for him to climb out of his measuring tape. Watch children near the water and keep to safe paths where roots or wet ground make walking uneven. The National Trust says the parkland is free to enter daily, while the mansion and formal gardens have separate arrangements. Check current notices for weather closures or work before travelling, and respect temporary barriers. Fishing, swimming and barbecues are not allowed in the park. Leave the lake and its birds undisturbed, and enjoy a large piece of Newport that belongs in everyone's day.
