Tredegar House's red-brick mansion near Newport is a splendid place to discover how the Morgan family lived, entertained and occasionally made the rest of us look badly underdressed. I walked in trying to behave like a stately guest; the size of the rooms sent my confidence straight to the servants' entrance. The National Trust cares for the house, gardens and parkland. Inside, state rooms show a wealthy household's public face, while below-stairs spaces reveal the work supporting it. Generations of the Morgan family shaped the house and its collections. The Trust presents Tredegar as influenced by local people too. Each room asks who used it, who cleaned it and who decided what belonged there. Compare a showy room with a working area. The contrast says much about rank. I suspect an old portrait has spent centuries correcting visitors' posture; that is my invention, and it has worked on me. Furniture, architecture and household spaces are the real evidence. Give the gardens their own visit, but do not let a park stroll stand in for the house. The mansion and formal gardens have ticketed entry, while the separate parkland is free; check the National Trust's live calendar because their hours differ. Assistance dogs can enter the house, but other dogs cannot. Some upstairs rooms have limited access, with alternative material available for visitors unable to reach them. This account is for the mansion itself, where Newport's grand domestic history is on display behind the brick.

This does not grant access. Check current paths, opening conditions and ownership before entering.
