Traighena National School

Detached three-bay single-storey T-plan national school, dated 1911, with projecting gabled porch to front, and having lower catslide return to rear fronted by lower lean-to addition, and with recent flat-roof extension also to rear. Pitched slate roof with decorative terracotta ridge tiles, exposed rafter ends, replacement rainwater goods, and slightly projecting rendered chimneystacks to gable ends; kneeler stones to porch roof, slate roof to return and addition; felt roof to extension, with replacement rainwater goods. Roughcast-rendered walls with decorative round cast-iron vents to gables. Painted plaque inscribed "TRAIGHENA/NATIONAL SCHOOL/1911". Square-headed openings with replacement painted stone sills and replacement timber casement windows and doors. Building set within curve in road, with low rendered boundary wall having entrances with square-plan piers.

This relatively intact school building is sited prominently on the roadside. Although extended over the last few decades it still retains much of its original character with its main T-plan and projecting front porch which is typical of many national schools in Dún na nGall [County Donegal]. The decorative oculus vents and projecting chimneybreasts add visual interest to the facade.
