Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Townhead as Stone Circle (neolithic) - (bronze Age)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, the Townhead stone circle may have been used for ceremonial or astronomical purposes. Little specific folklore is recorded, though such sites were often associated with communal gatherings or ritual activity in prehistoric Scotland.
