Tomb

Built into the top of the inner (N) face of the sea-wall at Arthurstown, which was built c. 1800. A coffin shaped stone (H 0.64m; Wth 0.3m) with a human figure in relief, probably representing a baby, is built into the sea-wall at Arthurstown. A coffin-shaped and child-sized stone trough (WX044-018003-) at Ballyhack graveyard c. 500m to the W could have served it as a sarcophagus. A second stone (WX044-033001-) is c. 100m to the E along the sea-wall. Both stones might als have come from the same graveyard. Effigial tomb; 19th-century adaptation incorporating a prehistoric or early historic carved stone. Its significance lies in the reuse of a possibly ancient effigy within a later coastal defensive structure, reflecting local traditions of incorporating ancient monuments into new constructions.
