Tobernagapple

Located at the bottom of a N-facing slope and c. 400m SE of Killary church (ME012-020----). This is annotated as ‘Tobernagapple’ (Horse well) in gothic lettering on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map, but John O’Donovan writing in 1836 (Herity 2001, 46) mentions only one well in relation to the church. From the maps it would appear to have been built into a field bank and is the origin of a canalised SSE-NNW stream with St Toole’s Well c. 80m to the NNW. Tobernagapple, also known as Horse Well, is traditionally associated with Saint Gapple, a lesser-known early Irish saint. The well was historically visited for the cure of horses, reflecting a folk tradition linking holy wells to animal welfare and veterinary practices.
