Tobermuire

Named 'Tobermurry' on 1842 and 1905 OS 6-inch maps. Stone wall encloses subrectangular area (12m x 10m) around well. Well consists of oval pond (8m x 4.5m) with stone base and revetment. Various shrines to Blessed Virgin, erected by pilgrims, line edge of pond. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Linked to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the well at Tobermuire, Rockspring was a site of Marian devotion, with pilgrims traditionally visiting for healing and prayer. The stone enclosure and multiple shrines suggest a long-standing Catholic tradition, possibly dating back to pre-Reformation times, with the site continuing to be venerated into the modern period.
