Tobermacduagh

In improved pasture, on a NE-facing slope, just above a steep break of slope. The well is defined as a sunken area (dims. c. 3m NNE-SSW; 1.75m ESE-WNW; D 0.4m) (long axis NNE-SSW) with a deeper hole within the SSW area which is most likely to be the source. According to local information, the people of the area took turns to clean the well and took pride in it. There is a mature beech tree c. 11m to the S and according to local information this is called the 'Coola tree'. According to O'Flanagan (1930, 253), 'In the townland of Alleen-Ryan is the site of the old Church called Teampull Mhic Duach and near it a holy well called Tobar Mhic Duach which is still visited by a few pilgrims on Saturdays and crowds on Good Fridays.' Tobermacduagh is traditionally associated with Saint MacDuagh, an early Irish Christian saint venerated for his healing miracles. The well was historically visited for its supposed curative properties, particularly for eye ailments and general physical afflictions, and was likely a site of pilgrimage and seasonal rituals.
