Toberlownagh

Unenclosed spring situated on a steep rocky W-facing slope. The name means 'well of new milk' (leamhnacht), and may refer to a tradition associated with some wells around the country, that the well gave milk during the Famine. However, the name Tibberlanaghte is attested since 1570 (See logainm.ie accessed 09/05/2019), and might derive from the presence of calcium or chalk giving it a milky white colour (pers. com. Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich 09/05/2019). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
