What is recorded here
Toberlaghten is a holy well in County Cork where smooth grooves cut into stone and broken delph at the bottom suggest generations of touching, dipping and remembering. The well stands enclosed on three sides beneath a corbelled roof with a wooden cross, while a small recess holds cups and holy items like offerings left behind. Local story says it moved from Knockyrourke after being desecrated, as if water itself refused to be forgotten and carried its life into new stone.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Well enclosed on three sides by stone wall; open to SW; corbelled roof with wooden cross on top. Recess on right side of entrance holds cups and various holy items. Smooth grooves have been cut on some stones. Quartzite pebbles, coins and broken delph at bottom of well. Locally believed that well moved here from Knockyrourke (CO050-097----) after it was desecrated.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Toberlaghten is associated with Saint Laghtan, a 7th-century Irish saint known for his ascetic practices and healing miracles. The well is traditionally visited for cures related to eye ailments and general well-being, with the grooves likely used for pilgrims to collect water or for ritual purposes.
