Tiravray fort

: Located on the summit of a N-S drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793), and on all editions of the OS 6-inch map. it is a subcircular overgrown area (dims 34m N-S; 28.5 E-W) that slopes down slightly to the E defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at N: Wth of base 4.5m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.6m) that is largely reduced to a scarp (at E: Wth 1.55m; H 1.75m), and traces of a silted fosse. There are entrances at N (Wth of top 2m) and E (Wth of top 4.5m). Tiravray fort is a subcircular early-medieval ringfort situated on a drumlin ridge, evidenced by its depiction on 18th-century maps and surviving earthworks. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy lore, often regarded as dwellings of the "Good People" or places of supernatural activity in Irish folklore.
