Thomas Hooker was a prominent Puritan minister and religious leader who played a key role in establishing the colony of Connecticut in 1636, where he is credited with founding the first democratic government in America through the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. He served as curate of St Mary's Church in Chelmsford, Essex, from 1626 to 1629 before emigrating to the American colonies.
