Thomas Francis Meagher was born in Waterford City on 3 August 1823, the start of a life that crossed oceans, wars and continents before ending in a river. He led Young Irelanders, escaped Australian exile, fought for the Union as an Irish Brigade general, then governed part of Montana. His death in the Missouri River in 1867 still invites suspicion, as if the water took a man whose brilliance threatened more than one empire.
