Thomas Condon was born in County Cork, Ireland, on March 3, 1822, before crossing the Atlantic at age eleven to become Oregon's first state geologist. That young immigrant transformed a frontier missionary into a scientist who identified ancient fossils in the John Day country, earning the admiration of national paleontologists. His life bridged two continents, carrying Irish resilience into American classrooms and laboratories until his death in 1907.
