Man-made underground passage in Gowlane South — Report the wrong picture

Under a levelled rath in Gowlane South, a collapsed chamber revealed seven lintels and a blocked creepway, proving people built the darkness before it was forgotten. The stone walls still hold their shape, waiting for someone brave enough to crawl through the narrow gap and discover what the builders hid from the sky.

In a levelled rath (CO050-093001-). This Man-made underground passage was discovered in 2000 when a large stone was displaced causing the ground to collapse into a stone-built chamber. The resulting opening (1.32m x 1.05m) allows easy access to a rectangular chamber (4m NE-SW; 1m NW-SE; H 1.45m). The walls of the chamber are lined with roughly coursed stones and it is roofed with seven lintels. Five lintels remain in situ and two have fallen into the chamber. At the NE end of the chamber is a creepway (Wth 0.47m; H c. 0.5m), roofed with a single lintel, and blocked with collapsed stones.
