The Presbytery

Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1890, incorporating fabric of earlier building, having single-bay two-storey block, return and lean-to to rear (west). Formerly in use as presbytery. Hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves to main block, having rendered chimneystacks, terracotta finials and cast-iron rainwater goods. Hipped slate roof to rear block having rendered chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched slate roof to return, having cast-iron rainwater goods and recent rooflights. Rendered walls throughout, having painted stone sill courses to ground and first floors of main block. Raise moulded render cross motif in relief to side (north) elevation of main block. Square-headed window openings with chamfered surrounds to main block, having three-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor and two-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor. Two-over-two and two-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to rear block and return. Square-headed door opening to front elevation, having timber panelled door with overlights, glazed timber sidelights, render keystone and hood-moulding, and limestone threshold. Set within own grounds, having square-profile piers with limestone capping stones and splayed flanking rendered walls to entrance.

A large and imposing parochial house, indicative of the status and wealth of the Roman Catholic Church in the late nineteenth century. The door opening, render detail and unusual sash windows add interest to the regular façade. It retains much of its historic character and charm.
