The Diamond is Donegal Town's grand invitation to stand in the middle of everything and pretend, briefly, that you own the place. Its four-sided stone memorial, busy edges and generous pedestrian space give this square more character than a whole drawer of polished jewels, although I have checked the paving and found no diamonds to finance my dinner. Start with the Four Masters Memorial, the sandstone obelisk whose four faces carry the names of the scholars remembered here. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records it as erected in 1934, with carved crosses and interlacing on its faces. The four men worked on the Annals of the Four Masters between 1630 and 1636, gathering an enormous account of Irish history. You need not read every volume before lunch, but do walk around the monument: the inscriptions reward a proper look, and each side gives the square a slightly different backdrop. Then look beyond the stone. Donegal Town grew as a market town, and the Diamond remains its natural meeting place, with streets leading toward shops, food and the nearby castle. The square is lively because people actually use it, rather than because somebody put a heritage label on it. Take a seat, watch a few arrivals, and you may see a meeting arranged with the wonderfully exact instruction, 'at the Diamond'. If a stranger looks expectantly at you, do not claim to be the fifth Master; that joke has already been tried by me and received a mercifully short hearing. The centre received new paving, planting, seating, lighting and a community canopy in the 2024 public-space works. The design uses local Mountcharles sandstone alongside granite and reused paving, a handsome mix that lets the memorial stay the star without turning the rest of the square into its waiting room. The Council made the renovated central area pedestrian-only. That is a practical pleasure: you can cross it on foot and pause over the details while the surrounding streets keep their ordinary town rhythm. Visit whenever the public square is open, with no admission desk or ticket to negotiate. The central pedestrian space offers an easier approach than a rough field path, though anyone needing particular access arrangements should check the current streetscape before travelling. Give way to town events or temporary work if they are under way. The monument stands outdoors; nearby businesses have their own hours, and Donegal Castle is a separate visit with its own arrangements. A photograph here makes a lovely starting point, but leave room for the people going about their day. I like the Diamond best as a gateway rather than a finish line. Read the four names, choose a street, and let Donegal Town pull you toward its castle, food or river. If the monument persuades you to remember even one local story, the Masters have won another reader; if you merely discover a superb lunch, I suspect the square will forgive you.
