What is recorded here
In County Meath, a single stake still stands on the peatland surface, not buried but exposed like a bone in white flesh. It is thirty centimetres long and only three and a half centimetres across, yet its end was cut into a chisel point with a curved metal blade. The slight dish in the facets still records the shape of the tool that made it. Around it, natural wood and dark bog may be hiding entire lost structures, waiting for rain or time to reveal them.
A single stake visible on the field surface demonstrating the archaeological potential of the location. The stake, 0.3m long and 0.035m in diameter, retained a worked end - a chisel point made using a metal blade. The facets were slightly dished suggesting a convex rather than a flat metal blade was used. It was situated in an area rich in natural wood which may be obscuring other archaeological deposits. The area is characterised by laminated highly humified raised bog peats. (Bermingham 2014)
