Structure

A spread (Wth 4.21m; D 0.52m) of irregularly laid brushwood, roundwoods and twigs in opposing drain faces. The wood is dispersed although a small concentration occurs towards the centre of the band. No structural pattern can be discerned, however, and as the wood crosses two peat strata, it is not likely to all be contemporary. Metal-cut toolmarks are present on a number of pieces. Wood species include birch, alder, ash and oak. The site is situated in Sphagnum peat which changes from moderately humified to well-humified towards the upper part of the site. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1996. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
