Structure in Inishmore OR Deer Island,river Fergus

An Iron Age structure described by O’Sullivan et al. (2010) as follows: ‘The remains of a post alignment are preserved in the mudflats on the north shore of Deer Island, c. 150m from HWM at the nearest point. The post alignment consists of a line of closely set posts, 380m long. It is not thought to be the remains of a post and wattle fence as wattles could not easily have been woven through the narrow gap between the posts. The line runs roughly parallel to the shore and to D25. The posts protruded only slightly through the mud. The posts were at least 0.75m deep. It is not known what function it may have had and requires further study. A stake (made of elm wood) was dated to cal. BC 166-43 (2074+/-20BP).
