Structure in Ballyveelish North

Excavated by Doody (1987, 10-21; 1988, 176-80) between April and May 1982. Within a ditch barrow (TS077-046004-) and surrounding a cist (TS077-046003-) were the remains of a circular timber structure (dims. 5.1m N-S; 7m E-W), indicated by post-holes, and a possible D-shaped porch or entrance area (dims. 5m N-S; 2.4m E-W), indicated by curving foundation trenches with an entrance (Wth 1m) facing NE (ibid. 178-9). The excavator suggests that this structure was specifically built for a ceremonial function associated with the interment of the cremated remains, after which the building was deliberately burnt, as evidenced by the large quantity of charcoal and ash in the foundation trenches and adjacent fosse of the ring-ditch (ibid.).
