Structure in Ardagawna

Towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (E3269)) during 2007 at Ardagawna 2 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe M6 road development revealed a semicircular arc of stakeholes (diam. c. 2m E-S-W) open to the N, which may have formed a temporary shelter. A small pit (dims 1.35m NW-SE; 0.65m NE-SW; D 0.09m) 4m to the N provided a C14 date of Cal. BC 759-416. A subcircular pit (dims 4.1m NE-SW; 3.1m NW-SE; D 0.85m) c . 5m to the SW is interpreted as a roasting pit and was filled with burnt mound material, probably from fulacht fia (RO052-032001-) which is c. 25m to the SW.
