Siege of Athlone

Athlone resisted King William in July 1690 because Colonel Richard Grace and two thousand men held the river crossing against a much larger force. That first refusal forced the Williamites away and preserved the Jacobite line in west Ireland. The town bought time with blood, bridge work and cannon fire until the greater siege came the following summer.
