Strata Florida Abbey Cemetery was established as part of the Cistercian Strata Florida Abbey, founded in the 12th century by Welsh prince Rhys ap Gruffydd, with construction of the abbey beginning around 1164. The cemetery is associated with the religious and monastic significance of the site, which became an important center of Cistercian monasticism in Wales.
