Stones

Located at the crest of the S-facing slope of the upper terrace of the Newgrange ridge. There are the remains of a severely damaged mound (diam. c. 30.5m) known as Site U contained within a kerb, some of which survives at SE. It is listed as possible passage-tomb (O'Kelly 1978, 49; Herity 1974, 247). The aerial archaeological survey conducted by the National Monuments Service in 2018 did not add anything to our knowledge of this monument but it did identify two possible rectangular features (dims c. 10m x c. 10m) defined by straight fosses located c. 30m and 50m SE of the passage tomb (Condit and Keegan 2018, 114-115, Fig. 106).     The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).
