What is recorded here

Tankardsrock in County Louth, Ireland, once held a standing stone visible against the sky. Early in the twentieth century the stone disappeared into an adjacent hole, removing its marker from the local landscape. Whether it fell, was buried or was moved remains unknown, but the loss changed the place from a landmark into a memory.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Standing stone recorded as having stood at this location was buried in an adjacent hole early in the twentieth century (CLAJ 1964, 361).
