Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception

Freestanding Roman Catholic church, built c. 1820. Cruciform-plan, flat-roofed sacristy and extensions to north, three-stage stone tower, ashlar crenellations and pinnacles to west c. 1880, extension to east transept, gable-fronted porch to east. Pitched slate roofs, clay ridge tiles, cut stone cross finials to north and south gables, half-round uPVC gutters. Painted roughcast-rendered walling, painted smooth rendered plinth, smooth rendered quoins and forming pediment to porch; squared-and-snecked stone walling to tower, dressed limestone quoins, ashlar limestone crenellated parapet supported on stone corbels, pinnacles to corners. Pointed arch window openings, painted smooth rendered surrounds, painted stone sills, stained glass leaded light windows; square-headed window openings to sacristy and extensions; pointed arch window openings to tower, dressed block-and-start limestone surrounds, leaded diamond-lattice windows; paired pointed arch openings to third stage, painted timber louvred shutters. Square-headed door openings, smooth rendered surrounds, timber horizontally-sheeted double doors. Interior with painted smooth rendered walling, altar located on stepped platform at crossing, painted timber galleries to south, east and west, side chapel to east. Corner-sited church, bounded by painted smooth- and roughcast rendered walling, square-profile piers, gabled caps, wrought-iron gates, foundry stamp "CRAWFORD DUNDALK 1843". Gates to north between church and tree-lined avenue to graveyard.

Kilcurly Church, altered and extended by W.H. Byrne and John Murray, continues to hold a prominent position within the social and physical landscape of Kilcurly and its hinterland. The simple rendered façade and modest interior, is strikingly contrasted by the finely executed stone tower with its attractive lattice windows adding a pleasing decorative touch. The graveyard with its long curving avenue completes the site.
