Standing stone in Newtown (decies Without Drum By., Dungarvan Par.)

On a gentle NE-facing slope, 30m N of the crest of a broad flat-topped ridge. The Comeragh Mountains are visible to the N, the estuary to the E where the River Brickey flows into the Dungarvan estuary, Helvick Head to ESE, there is a ridge of hills to the S which continues to the SW as Drum Hills. The land rises gradually to W and NW where the view is limited. A roughly circular water-logged hollow (diam. c. 5m) marks the former location of the standing stone in a field is traditionally called the ‘Stone Field’ (Knight-O’Connor et al. 2017). There is a concentration of dock weeds around the edge of the hollow. A standing stone had stood in this hollow until c. 2014 (ibid.).
