What is recorded here

Located on the floodplain of the NW-SE Licky River with the stream c. 200m to the NE, and at the bottom of a N-facing, grass-covered slope. It is described as an old church site where a bullaun stone and a small cross-inscribed stone with an inscription were found (Power 1910; 1952, 130). The inscribed stone (dims. c. 0.35m x 0.24m; T 0.07m) is of sandstone and the inscription, written in the Latin alphabet, was read by Power as AEDUI and by Macalister (1945, vol. 1, 109-10) as AEDUIE, which is correct. There are two small crosses inscribed in the same face of the stone. The location of the site is known but there is no visible evidence of a church or enclosure. The cross-inscribed stone subsequently disappeared (Power, 1952, 130), while the bullaun stone was moved to the R.C. cemetery in Dungarvan before 1907 (Power 1907d, 130), but cannot be traced now. Power, Rev. P. (1907d) Place names of the Decies. WAJ. 10, 14- ?, 88-134, 184-240, 263-310. Power, Rev. P. (1910) On an early Christian inscription from Co. Waterford. WAJ 13, 103-06. Power, Rev. P. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 6th October, 2011 Compiled by: Michael Moore
