Standing stone in Lackabane (muskerry East By.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Lackabane in Muskerry East once held two standing stones, one recorded by Condon in 1916 and the other beside it. The first stood thirty-six inches tall with a broad flat face, tall enough to mark a boundary or gather people for a festival. Both have vanished without a trace, leaving behind only the memory of stone in an ordinary field.
Condon (1916, 141) recorded stone (H 36ins; 19ins by 11ins) 'in field adjoining' field in which standing stone (CO050-157----) stood. Removed; exact location not known. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
