Kilballyowen holds a standing stone at the south-west base of Knockderk Hill, erected within living memory as a scratching post for cattle. What looks like ancient mystery is probably ordinary human ingenuity: a smooth stone set upright so horns and skin could rub against it. The field may have seemed empty, but the cattle knew exactly where relief waited.

Modern livestock scratching post described by O'Kelly (1944, 20) as following; 'At the S.W. base of Knockderk Hill there is a standing stone. It was erected within living memory as a scratching-post for cattle'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 06 August 2019
