Standing stone in Gort Na Tiobratan

Standing stone

What is recorded here

An unidentified stone still stands in bogland on a west-facing slope in Gort Na Tiobratan, tall enough to mark a boundary, a warning or a remembered person. Its irregular shape resists a neat explanation, while the wet ground surrounds it like a living archive. Perhaps people once oriented themselves to it when rain erased every other landmark.
In bogland, on W-facing slope. Stone (H 0.8m; 0.95m x 0.7m) is irregular in plan with indeterminate long axis. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
