Standing stone in Dungar

Located on top of low rise of ground in undulating countryside region with good extensive views in all directions. Nearby ringwork (OF043-054----) located approximately 130m to the S. In pasture, located beside a metalled farm road which leads up to old farmhouse to NW of standing stone. Nearby ringwork located on lower wet unreclaimed pasture. Ringwork may be an example of a re-used burial mound of the ring-barrow class and standing stone may form part of a ritual landscape. Present remains consist of a tall narrow standing stone (H 2m; 0.40m x 0.25m) of conglomerate sandstone set into a shallow depression with some evidence of packing stones around its base. It’s long axis is orientated E-W and is rectangular in plan. Appears to have been re-used as a scratching post by cattle. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 09 August 2012

Probably dates to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, given its location and association with a nearby ringwork, suggesting ritual or territorial significance. Its alignment or carvings may have had astronomical or symbolic meaning, though specific folklore or use remains unrecorded.
