Standing stone

What is recorded here

In the centre of an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA082-035004-). An irregular-shaped, prostrate slab (L 1.4m; Wth 0.95m; T 0.1-0.4m), which, according to local information, originally stood upright on the central rise in the enclosure. It is now lying within a rectangular hollow, all that remains of a church (MA082-035001-). There is a bullaun stone (MA082-035005-) immediately to E. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 22 December 2021
Probably dating to the Early Christian period, this standing stone may have had a ritual or commemorative function within the ecclesiastical site. Local tradition and its central positioning suggest possible links to early monastic activity or territorial marking.
