What is recorded here

Crannagh stands at the centre of a cashel in County Carlow, a granite pillar tapering slightly and aligned north-northeast to south-southwest. It is the kind of place where people may have gathered to mark seasons, settle disputes or remember warnings, yet no written name preserves that purpose. The stone still occupies the middle of the field like an unchanged participant in every conversation held around it.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
