Standing stone in Bohadoon Mountain

Standing stone

What is recorded here

According to Power (1952, 142) a standing stone at Coolnasmear was known as 'Diarmaid Liath' - Grey Dermot. A standing stone located in Bohadoon on the N bank of the E-W Glendermot River across from Coolnasmear and close to the head of the river valley may be the stone described. This is a conglomerate stone (dims. 0.5-1.2m x 0.7m; H 1.3m) with no perceptible orientation. A fragment (dims. 0.38m x 0.3m; L 1.05m) lying beside it may have been broken off the top. Power, Rev. P. (1952) The placenames of the Decies. (second ed.) Cork University Press. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 26th April, 2011. Compiled by: Michael Moore.
Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the standing stone may have had ritual or territorial significance. The name "Diarmaid Liath" suggests a local folklore or legendary association, possibly with a figure from Gaelic tradition.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
