Standing stone in Ardgroom Outward

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Ardgroom Outward holds a rectangular stone one metre tall beside a fallen companion in boggy ground at the foot of Tooreennamna Mountain. The upright faces north-east, while the larger prostrate stone lies two and a half metres away like a shadow detached from its body. Neither is buried, decorated or tied to a known date. They simply waited out the centuries in wet grass, perhaps marking a boundary, a loss or a path now forgotten.
In a level boggy area with nearby outcropping rocks, at the foot of Tooreennamna Mountain. This standing stone (0.52m x 0.4m; H 1.06m) is rectangular in plan and section and is orientated NNE-SSW. A prostrate stone (L 1.2m; Wth 0.45m) lies on the ground 2.6m to the N. Its relationship with the standing stone is unclear. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
