Standing stone in Ardgroom Outward

Standing stone

What is recorded here

A straight rectangular stone still stands in bogland on the north foothills of Coomacloghane Mountain, aligned northeast to southwest. It rises about one and a half metres above the damp earth, narrow enough to grasp but heavy enough to have defied forgetting. People may have set it there as a marker, a warning or a gift to someone no longer named. The bog has taken much more generous care of it than pride ever could.
In bogland on N foothills of Coomacloghane Mountain. Rectangular stone aligned NE-SW (H 1.58m; 0.55m x 0.39m). (O'Shea and Crowley 1972, 105). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
