St. Werburgh, a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon saint and abbess, is traditionally associated with healing wells and is venerated in several parts of England, particularly in Cheshire and Staffordshire. The well at St. Werburghs, Commons East likely participated in the broader tradition of holy wells linked to her name, where water was believed to have curative properties, especially for eye ailments and general health.
