St Peters Church

Located on the S-facing slope of a small NE-SW spur in the foothills of White Mountain. According to a Visitation by Thomas Ram, the Protestant bishop of Ferns, in 1615 the church of Lowdegan was impropriate to Glascarig (WX017-010001-), Robert Cleere was the priest, and while the church was repaired the chancel was in ruins (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 270). The site of the parish church of Templeludigan is within a subcircular or D-shaped graveyard (dims. c. 45m N-S; c. 40m E-W) defined by stone-clad earthen banks with straight sides on the N and E sides. A Church of Ireland church was built in the graveyard in 1808 (Lewis 1837, vol. 2, 617) but it is now removed. According to John O’Donovan writing c. 1839 buried foundations of the older structure were found in the graveyard when grave digging (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 346). St Patrick’s Well (WX024-034----) is c. 470m to the ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).
