St Marys Catholic Church

Cruciform church (long axis NE-SW with transepts at NE end), of random-rubble limestone construction with quoins. According to local information, built in 1878 to replace earlier church which is shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Slim pointed windows; porch entrance at SW end of nave, door opes in end wall of transepts. Sacristy between chancel and NW transept with later addition attached. SE transept has corner buttresses, bellcote atop gable. Fine timber roof supported by corbels, galleries in transepts. Roadside wall enclosing churchyard to SE with iron hitching-rings along external wall. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. St Mary's Catholic Church in Lisduggan South was built in 1878 as a cruciform church with a long axis oriented NE-SW, replacing an earlier church recorded in 1842; it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and represents a 19th-century Catholic revival in rural Ireland.
