St Marys Catholic Church

At Waterloo, overlooking bridge and crossroads. Cruciform church built 1815-17; Mulcahy (1989a, 14-15) records a plaque with Irish inscription attributing the building to 'Fr. Matt [Horgan] and his people'. Described by Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 650) as 'neat Gothic structure'. Nave lit by narrow pointed lancets with switchline tracery, stained glass window in N wall over altar. Exterior elevations plastered and adorned with quartrefoil niches and string courses. Immediately to E is slightly later bell tower (CO062-200002-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
