In a low-lying landscape. An overgrown natural spring is surrounded by a rectangular drystone-walled enclosure (dims 5.3m WNW-ESE; 5m NNW-SSE) which was built c. 1753 (OS Name Book). A limestone slab (RO041-026002-) (dims 0.6m x 0.45m; T 0.2m) with an inscription recording the building of the wall by Sir Marcus Lowther Crofton in Sep. 1780 (Siggins 1992, 77) is at the well. St. Catherine's Well is associated with the veneration of St. Catherine of Alexandria, a Christian martyr known for her intellect and faith. Traditionally, such wells were sites of pilgrimage and healing, with water believed to have curative properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and skin.
